Installing Third Party Decoders in WinTV

Adding new video decoders to WinTV

Installing the LAV decoders

  • 1- go to the LAV github page
    https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
Download the latest version of LAV. The file will have a name like this (the LAV name changes with each new version):
    LAVFilters-0.81-Installer.exe
Run this installer (this will install the LAV decoders on your PC).
  • 2- in WinTV v10, click the 'gear' icon on the lower left hand corner
  • 3- go to the 'Advanced' tab
  • 4- at the bottom of this tab, click the button which says 'Enable Third Party Decoders'
  • 5- there are several video decoders used depending upon which video format your TV broadcaster used. The most popular are 'MPEG-2', 'H.264' and 'HEVC'. You might need to try all of these decoders to see which one works the best.
  • 6- close and reopen WinTV to have the new video decoder used by WinTV.
  • Next, run a test. Open WinTV and tune to the channel which was giving you problems previously. See if the channel plays. If it does, then you should can leave the '3rd Party Decoders'. If you are still having problems, you can go back to '3rd Party Decoders' and try another decoder.
  • If you are still not getting either a picture or sound on the problem channel, the TV broadcaster might have changed the broadcast format since the last time you performed a full channel scan. In this case, you can either erase the channel database and then rescan for channels or you can manually change the broadcast format type.
To manually change the broadcast format type, in WinTV v10 click the 'gear' icon on the lower left hand corner and go to the 'All Channels' tab. Double click on the channel you are having a problem with. In the "Details" pull down, you will see the video format which WinTV thinks is the correct format (this is from your initial channel scan). Try changing the 'Type'.
  • Still having problems? Send us a full mux so we can troubleshoot the problem. Here is how to do this:
    • once again, go to the 'Advanced' tab in WinTV
    • click on the button marked 'Record Full mux'
    • click OK, OK, OK to close the Advanced menu. WinTV is now ready to record a full mux.
    • in WinTV, choose your channel in 'Find Channel'. A full mux recording will now start being made
    • after you have recorded about 10 to 20 seconds, click the 'Stop' button (next to the red record button). The full mux recording will be made and can be found in your Recordings folder (by default, c:\users\public\PublicVideos)
    • the full mux recording will have a name such as 'MuxCapture-'. Put this recording on something like a dropbox, google drive, etc. and then contact our tech support department at:
techsupport@hauppauge.com (North America) or support@hauppauge.co.uk (Europe)
Please send us a link to the dropbox/google drive. Don't attach the recording or it will be removed by our firewall. Once we get your recording, we will run the recording through our video analyzer and let you know what we see.
