Default Hd PvR Crashing laptop (Coloured screen and loud fuzz noise)

Hi, i've owned a Hd Pvr for a while now. And recently i've been experiencing problems when it's plugged in. It doesn't seem to matter if i'm recording or not.
Sometimes it will be fine for ages, then other time it will crash a few times in 20mins. It's hard to explain what happens, but the whole computer screen goes a funny colour, so far i have seen purple, yellow, green. and it's like the screen you get on your telly with no signal, but coloured. And then the pc makes a loud fuzzing noise.
I can't work out what this is, but it is very irritating and i have to restart my laptop at least once every half an hour.
my laptop is: Dell, inspiron 1564. Intel core i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13 GHZ.
4GB RAM, 64bit operating system. 300gig hard drive.
Any advice would be great. The only two options i can think of are:
    1) my laptop can't handle it, which i doubt
    2) The Pvr wants to record in a different format eg. pal ntsc secam etc..

I use the pvr for xbox recording by the way.

Thanks in advance for any replies

    Oliver

My PVR freezes my laptop if I turn off my PVR while the recording software is still open on my laptop.
