It means Hauppauge wont be able to help if you tell them something isnt working when you're using some other decoder. ie, we can only provide support for the decoders we supply.

Re: 3rd party decoders
Oooh I see, yes THAT kind of support.
Can it record in h264 if I tell it to? I thought it could only do mpeg2?

For digital it'll record whatever is broadcast, ie either MPEG2 or H.264 channels. What you get is up to your broadcaster.
For analog it always record MPEG2.

I see. Which is the best MPEG2 one to use? When I import it into VirtualDub to edit out any adverts, it's out of sync.

What do you mean? The video decoders you use in WinTV will make zero difference to VirtualDub. The video decoders selected in the WinTV settings screen are only used when you play recordings or watch live tv in WinTV.

Oh right. I thought there might be better mpeg2 codec than the default one. Thought it was the way the file was made that stopped it playing properly

Re: 3rd party decoders
the codec that wintv uses by default should be fine. about editing MPEG-2 files in virtualdub, probably not the best idea...try womble mpeg dvd editor. can direct-stream cut files like vdub does.
the audio might be out of sync because vdub is probably using an alternate decoder (via DirectShow, perhaps with the Halii Splitter), whereas wintv uses its own codec for decoding.
