HD PVR with onboard graphics on a laptop?

Hey peeps.

I am wanting to buy the HD PVR unit mainly to record my Xbox 360 gameplay in HD. My main problem is that my main desktop PC with very good sepcs (CPU and GPU wise) is 25~35 meters away from my Xbox 360 so USB cable extension is out of the way.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop which about 3 years old (Dual core 1.7GHz), 1GB RAM and Onboard Graphics (9400 I think). Running Windows 7 premium just fine.

I was thinking to hook up the HD PVR to the laptop while recording gameplay and then transferring the files over the network from laptop to desktop to do final editing or rendering with Sony Vegas Pro.

So will HD PVR unit work with the laptop fine? I am not going to do any playback at all on the laptop. It's just going to be used as a medium to record the gameplay and from there I will transfer it to desktop for playback/editing.

Anyone know if it will record gameplay on a onboard graphics laptop?

To be honest I think your laptop cpu and graphics will struggle to play HD files. It may capture them OK as most of the work is done by the PVR box itself.

Your best bet is to download a video file someone has captured (.m2ts/.ts) from their HD PVR and see if it plays on your machine. Just google something like
"hauppauge hd pvr rapidshare" and you will find some samples to download.

Thanks for replying. Yes all I want to do is capture the recording on the laptop. That's it. After capturing, I will send it to desktop PC via network or flash drive and do the editing on the main desktop PC. So looks like HD PVR will do the job fine then considering it does hardware h.264 encoding

yer to capture it will work fine, but your lappy will come to a stand still on playback, so if your using an alternate pc to edit it will be fine - result.!

I use my low end laptop for capture and it has no problem at all.
It can playback, but only with cyberlink power dvd as that has dualcore playback support.

If you want, I can upload a raw file for you to test?
