Hi,
I've been having this problem from the very start of purchasing my PVR and at first I thought it was just me and that i'd set something up wrong. My t'v would go black randomly for a couple of seconds and display "no signal" before coming back on in a few seconds. I record my Xbox 360 using the component cables supplied and record at the maximum settings in Total Media Extreme.
I consulted a friend and he said he also had the same problem so it's not just me.
If anyone could help sort this out it would be greatly appreciated as my gaming is affected by the constant crashes and switch off.
(During the no signal stage the HD PVR appears to crash and records the last frame shown before continuing to work correctly when the T.V. comes back on.
Please help and thank you if you do.

make sure your computer is either, on, or off.
if your PC goes into standby or changes it 'state' in anyway, the PVR will look for signal again.
Turn the power on and off on the PVR untill you get a picture on the screen, then make sure your PC is either ON or OFF.
They are the only 2 things i think affect signal (PVR on/off or PC on/off).

I always have my PC on all the time, and it still does it when the PC hasn't changed "State" for hours.
It makes no difference at all...

screensaver?
log on/off screens?
Or is it during a bright white image.. do u know?
The exact same thing you describe happened to me last night.
I've had mine for approx 1 week, so needless to say I'm not very happy.
All I was doing at the time it occurred was playing a 360 game. The device was NOT recording, nor was the usb cable even plugged in. I tried power cycling the unit multiple times. (with the power button..) When that did nothing for me I tried cutting the power off completely and was still presented with no picture on my trusty 73".
I guess it's too much to ask for one of these to work w/o getting the hammer out.
I will be sending mine back. I grow tired of dealing with issues that should have been found and dealt with in QA.
---Anyway, I wish you good luck.
Oh yeah, It should be noted that I have purchased 2 other PVR devices within the last year, the Blackmagic Intensity Pro (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/images/products/intensity/hero.jpg) and a Hava HD Wireless (http://www.myhava.com/images/thumb/havawirelesSside195.jpg). I have to this day been unable to find a viable recording solution.

I found out early on that the HD-PVR is best left on.
That way when you fire up the console or what ever source you record from, it instantly detects the dimensions and is ready to go.
My HD-PVR is now NEVER off.
I agree with MGV, you must be doing something wrong if you cant record using any of the three devices you mentioned.

i had my pvr working for like 2 mins before this happened to me. i was watching a dvd on my xbox while installing and all that stuff then when i opened the disc tray on my xbox to put in cod and start recording it said no signal on the tv and there was just a black screen in total media extreme. amazon advised me to use these forums to find a solution and to email hauppauge directly which i did like almost a week ago and have had no reply. i dont want a refund i need a hd recorder and i cant have a blackmagic intensity pro because i use a small laptop (it has amazing specs so thats not why the pvr isnt working) hauppauge and amazon better find a way to get me a working up to date model by saturday. i am no happy

Hello,
The "No Signal" message is common on most modern TV sets...it simply means what it says......So I would check your cables. first. In particular where are the plugs located relevant to any heat source....I have an HDMI plug that has to be simply touched every now and then so that it makes contact (and removing the same message from the screen) Its all because it catches a lot of heat...expanding metals etc etc
Worth a look if nothing else.
Best Wishes,
John Kelly

Update: Oh well, did not work for me. I had to reset the PVR. Noticed though that as the recording started the screen size reported changed several times between 720 x 576 and 720 x 480 it did that for perhaps 4 - 5 seconds. It settled on the right value but the properties of the resulting file got the frame rate wrong....it seems the software can't get information from files it has created itself. Its a right old mess this software.

if your PC goes into standby or changes it 'state' in anyway, the PVR will look for signal again.
Yep, I learned that the hard way too. If the computer tries to go to "sleep" or "hibernate" while recording, the 'Capture Module' locks up tight, and I can't even force it to close--I have to reboot then restart Total Media Extreme. When the computer "turns off the display" to save power, however, it doesn't seem to lock up.

This worked for me:
If you have the hauppage hd pvr. Go to the recording program and device/format settings and turn down the bit rate encoding speed! Mine was at full from default, after i turned it down i get NO no signal at all!!!!!!! :D
Cant believe i didnt think of it before!
