View Full Version : NTSC HD-PVR video stutters when playing back

I just got my HD-PVR here in the US, and am conducting my first tests. I am capturing 1080i video at 10mbs constant rate.

I capture a couple of 5 minute clips, use the Arcsoft program to build each into a HARD DRIVE movie build, each 5 minute clip into it's own program.

I then copy these files over to my Dual Core Xeon computer with a Geforce 7600GT video card and watch the "Blu Ray" movie files from my hard drive with PowerDVD 8.

The sound (2 channel at this time due to driver limitations is fine).

The picture looks good, but about every 20-30 seconds it "stutters" for a few frames. Audio never loses sync but the video stutters.

When I play the video back on the Dual Core 2.33ghz machine that I use to capture the video (with the HD-PVR), this machine has a BUILT-IN Intel Graphics adapter on the motherboard, the video plays PERFECTLY through Arcsoft TotalMedia player that came with the HD-PVR.

I don't have another machine, Blu-Ray player or PS3 to test these videos on...

any thoughts as to why the video would stutter every 20-30 seconds on my high end workstation and not on the Integrated Intel video adapter on the capturing computer?

How do I know if this is a problem with the capture or my computer?

Most likely sounds like a decoder issue. You should be able to install the ArcSoft software on both computers. If you do, try playback through the Arcsoft software on your xeon computer and see if the same problem occurs.

Hello, I don't know if you ever resolved this issue but I don't think that it's a codec issue. I've experienced a similar problem. I've pushed the recording bitrates progressively higher to see just how far I can go and found that at variable bitrate peaks of 10 and over I got the same problem. I looked at the tech spec of my machine and although it's quad core, loads of ram and HD graphics card, it can only handle a maximum of 8 mbs through the graphics sub-system. Unsurprisingly, video stutters when I try to exceed this limitation. I found that by dropping the bitrate to a peak of 8 Mbs when recording cures this problem and still gives very good picture quality. Hope this helps you.
