WIN TV HVR 1950 Composite sych and Remote and edit problems

Hello, I just purchased a WIN TV HVR 1950 75111LF in San Diego, Ca. USA, while on vacation. It’s attached to my Toshiba P105-S6124 Satellite Laptop.
The disk was WIN TV 7.12a not sure 7.12c will do anything for me.
I can see the ATSC channels but my Composite Video is scrambled as though it was set to PAL not NTSC.
The audio is fine. The A V output of a Zinwell analog converter to ATSC is confirmed to be good on a monitor.

The Remote only has a few buttons working. Among them, the channels will not change. I tried a MS RC6ir Media Center remote with no response at all.
I cannot get the DVD Movie Factory to view the Composite either.
I wanted to use the AV in to capture and edit my camcorder ( but I left it at home and I'm here on vacation) , so the only AV source is the ATSC to Channel 3 converter for testing purposes. I may be able to use a laptop or VCR for an alternative AV in.
If I cannot record AV and edit it, then I don’t need this box and will return it to Fry’s Electronics. Then I’ll get a DAZZLE , I already have a Pinnacle HD stick that works on Media Center, although that little black thing gets mighty hot.

What do you think? Should I return it?
